Baroplastics Molded with Pressure Only - No Heat
Saturday December 6, 2003
A new type of plastic, called a baroplastic, has been developed at MIT. Baroplastics are molded by pressure alone - no heat is required. Like thermoplastics, they can be remolded, but the lack of heat eliminates thermal degradation. Initial tests were made on a combination of polystyrene and polybutyl acrylate, treated to link in nanometer-scale layers.
