New Composite Systems Cuts Cost of Carbon Auto Bodies
Saturday December 6, 2003
SP Systems has developed a material and processing technology that could cut the cost of carbon composite auto body shells by 75 percent. That would allow the materials to be used in production runs of five to about 2,000 vehicles, for cars costing around $100,000. Currently such materials are only used in very high end or racing vehicles. The system does not require an autoclave cure, and requires less paint than other carbon fiber bodies. (Although the article does not name the system, it is most likely SP's SPRINT.)
