Forum: Accidents, Analysis, Storage and Machining

Thursday January 29, 2004
There have been several interesting posts in the Forum over the past month. A degree student is looking for information about several recent accidents involving composite structures, a new user of composites is looking for some good "how to" information, and another reader would like to know the best conditions for storing dry carbon fibers. More advanced discussions cover the analysis of layer overlaps and ply drop-offs, and methods for holding honeycomb core while machining. STEVE20114 is looking for information regarding the crash of American Airlines Flight 587. I pointed him to the NTSB site, but I am sure he would welcome other sources. He is also looking for information about the hull failure of the TeamPhilips Catamaran, and on the Shuttle Columbia accident.

MARMILLER is new to composites and is looking for beginner information on making some carbon fiber car parts.

US655 has seen some expensive adhesive tape used to hold honeycomb in place for machining, but wonders if there is a less expensive alternative that won't contaminate the cores.

SSULAIMA1 would like to know what conditions dry carbon fiber should be stored in.

BUFO6 is looking for information on how to analyze layer overlaps and ply drop-offs.
