LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 30, 2004 - Talon Composites LLC, a manufacturer of proprietary metal matrix composites, announced today that it has entered into contract with British Nuclear Fuels PLC (BNFL) for the supply of Talon's approved Talbor(R) Metal Matrix Material. The Talbor materials will be utilized in PWR/BWR caskets for the transportation of nuclear fuel.
Talon Composites produces and markets a range of high performance advanced metal matrix material ("MMC") products utilizing Talon's proprietary technology under the name of Talbor(R) and Boralyn(R). The MMCs consist of aluminum and boron carbide and are supplied primarily to the nuclear waste and nuclear transportation industries for neutron shielding applications. The materials are stiffer than titanium, lighter than aluminum and wear like steel. Talon's process results in the boron carbide being dispersed evenly throughout the composite, making it particularly suitable to the nuclear industry. It is ideal for protecting critical fuel and providing shielding for both permanent and temporary storage of nuclear fuel. Additionally, the fine grain structure of the Talbor(R) substantially boosts cradle performance and allows for superior handling of both wet and dry nuclear storage.
Robin A. Carden, CEO of Talon remarked, "We are extremely pleased by the formalization of our contractual relationship with BNFL. The agreement will require us to form our materials into large assemblies for nuclear transportation. Also, Talon's relationship with Allied Manufacturing of Ontario, Calif., announced October 2003, allows us to combine our metal matrix technology with Allied's large-part machining capabilities. In the end, we are able to offer a complete storage cask fabricated from a variety of materials." He further added, "Advances in our manufacturing techniques facilitates the production of plates in excess of 5 meters long."
Talon Composites LLC is backed by Brener International Group LLC, an investment vehicle of entrepreneur Gabriel Brener. Mr. Brener stated that, "Robin Carden and his team continue to develop and improve innovative materials which serve many purposes. We see increasing demand for Talon's shielding products in Europe, Asia and the United States. We believe that the contract with BNFL is the beginning of a substantial relationship and opens the door to many more opportunities in the nuclear industry."
