An ADJUNCT RESEARCH ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR position is available April 12 in the Mechanical Engineering Department Structural Dynamics and Control (SDC) Laboratory at North Carolina A&T State University (NCA&TSU), in Greensboro, NC. Requirements for this position include a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field and experience in Nondestructive Evaluation and Health Monitoring of aerospace structures. Specific experience required includes acousto-ultrasonic and acoustic emission testing on composite and metallic structures, fatigue and failure mechanics of composite materials, processing and micromechanical design of composite materials, use of PZT, PVDF and AFC materials, and use of a scanning laser doppler vibrometer. The SDC laboratory serves the Mechanical Engineering Department and the aerospace structures group of the NASA Center for Aerospace Research at NCA&TSU. The SDC Laboratory has funded research projects in the areas of structural health monitoring, vibration suppression, and smart materials. Each project has a large experimental component. Currently six graduate students and nine undergraduate students work in the laboratory. The SDC Laboratory is a large fully equipped test laboratory with various data acquisition systems, control systems, scanning and fixed laser doppler vibrometers, and acoustic emission test equipment. The research associate will conduct experiments, maintain the laboratory, guide students in their research projects, present conference papers, and write journal papers and proposals. There also may be an opportunity to serve the Mechanical Engineering Department by teaching or by conducting teaching experiments. The starting date is on or after April 12, 1999, and the appointment is for one calendar year. Extensions may be possible based on funding availability and performance. NCA&TSU has 7,200 students, the college of engineering has 1,200 students, and the Mechanical Engineering Department has 220 undergraduate students and 55 graduate students in its MS and Ph.D. programs.
