Summa Licenses Technology for Microcellular Foam Injection Molding

TORRANCE, Calif., June 14 - Summa Industries (NASDAQ:SUMX) today announced that it has entered into an agreement for the license to use an advanced plastic molding technology, which includes a microcellular foam process. The process, which employs the high-pressure introduction of inert gas into liquid polymer immediately prior to its injection into molds, was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It enables the production of plastic products with sub-micron gas bubbles dispersed throughout the polymer material, resulting in less weight and reduced material usage. Unique optical design properties are also obtained through the use of the licensed technology.

Concurrently with the negotiation of the license, Summa's optical plastic products subsidiary, LexaLite International Corporation, purchased an advanced injection molding machine from a leading European supplier, equipped with the apparatus that enables the use of the licensed technology. The Company believes the 1,000-ton machine is the largest ever produced for use with the proprietary process.

The first application of the system will be the manufacture of a new product, a reflector, which provides excellent performance and efficiency. This new product will initially be marketed as a higher performance alternative to aluminum reflectors used in metal halide light fixtures designed for high ceiling lighting applications. The recently purchased equipment will be demonstrated manufacturing the new product at the National Plastics Exposition (NPE), June 19-23, at the McCormick Exposition Center in Chicago, in Booth 2583.

Summa Industries manufactures proprietary engineered plastic products for a broad spectrum of industrial and commercial markets. The Company has over 800 employees at ten manufacturing facilities in California, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Florida. Products, many of which are unique or patented, are shipped to customers worldwide. The Company's mission is to grow rapidly and profitably by reinvestment and through a continuous acquisition program.
