CFA Reports Polyester Resin Sales Increased in 2000

Arlington, Virginia - April 19, 2001 - Through the assistance of the resin supplier community, the Composites Fabricators Association (CFA) has gathered sales volumes of thermosetting polyester resins used in the manufacture of reinforced and non-reinforced plastic products. The CFA has released the year end data reports of polyester resin sales volume for the USA and Canada. The reports include resin sales by resin type and by application. While some areas experienced down turns in the latter half of 2000, the year finished at the level that was predicted in April, 2000, by the CFA.

Resin sales into the reinforced plastics markets was up 4.8% as compared to 1999. The stronger markets include marine up 5.9%, and transportation up 19%. Within the transportation market, the large truck industry showed significant declines but the increased use of composites in light trucks and automobiles compensated for it.

Resins used to manufacture architectural panels and resins used to manufacture bathroom fixtures showed usage declines of 12% and 4% as compared to 1999 figures.

Resin sales volume into the non-reinforced plastic markets was up 2.5% over the year 1999. The use of resins in construction, consumer goods and protective coating all showed steady growth.

The report of resin sales by resin type parallels the above data. All segments showed growth except the general purpose panel resin market. For a copy of the compiled report data, please click here.
