QUANTUM Tests Hydrogen Tank for Hyundai Santa Fe

IRVINE, Calif., July 2 - QUANTUM Technologies WorldWide, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of IMPCO Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:IMCO) announced today that it achieved a major milestone by being the first company to fill a hydrogen storage cylinder with compressed hydrogen at 5,000-psi at the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CAFCP). The 5,000-psi hydrogen storage cylinder (QUANTUM's TriShield(TM) tank) is part of the QUANTUM fuel storage and delivery system developed for the Hyundai Santa Fe fuel cell SUV. QUANTUM provided system integration expertise by installing its fuel storage and delivery system on the Hyundai Santa Fe at the CAFCP. The vehicle will undergo demonstration testing and driving.

According to Syed Hussain, President and CEO of QUANTUM, ``A vital issue in bringing fuel cell vehicles to the marketplace is extending the vehicle range -- which requires efficient storage of compressed hydrogen at a high pressure. This is the principal advantage of our TriShield(TM) tank and the significance of QUANTUM's 5,000-psi cylinder-fill achievement.''

QUANTUM's TriShield(TM) tanks are uniquely designed and manufactured with a one-piece permeation-resistant seamless liner, a carbon composite over-wrap for strength, and a tough impact-resistant shell. This rugged, low-cost, ultra-lightweight storage tank improves range and safety of hydrogen and removes the barriers to more rapid commercialization of vehicles incorporating alternative propulsion systems. The tank is designed to meet all applicable regulatory standards and additional OEM-specific validation tests.

The fuel system that QUANTUM designed and developed for the Santa Fe meets the challenging packaging requirements of fuel storage tanks and fuel system components for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. There is minimum intrusion into the cargo and passenger areas of the Hyundai Santa Fe, and eight and one-half inches of ground clearance, while maintaining maximum safety conditions.

The California Fuel Cell Partnership is a voluntary effort to advance a new automobile technology that could move the world toward practical and affordable environmental solutions. The Partnership will demonstrate fuel cell-powered electric vehicles under real day-to-day driving conditions; will demonstrate the viability of an alternative fuel infrastructure technology; explore the path to commercialization; and increase public awareness of fuel cell electric vehicles. The Partnership will place more than 70 fuel cell passenger cars and fuel cell buses on the road between 2000 and 2003.
