Definition:
An orderly heat and mass transfer process in which a large amount of thermal energy is expended by sacrificial loss of surface region material. The heat input from the environment is absorbed, dissipated, blocked and generated by numerous mechanisms. The energy adsorption processes take place automatically and simultaneously, serve to control the surface temperature, and greatly restrict the flow of heat into the substrate interior.
