Definition: A general term for a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, which may be represented as having been derived from an alkane with one hydrogen less than the alkane. Corresponding aromatic radicals are known as aryls. Examples of alkyl groups are C2H5-(ethyl), CH3CH2CH2-propyl), and (CH2)2C-(isopropyl).
