Definition:
(1) The penetration of a substance into the mass of another substance by molecular or chemical action. (2) The process whereby energy is dissipated within a specimen placed in a field of radiation energy. (3) Decrease in directional transmittance of incident radiation, resulting in a modification or conversion of the radiant energy into heat, for example. Light incident on a specimen may be partially reflected, partially transmitted, or partially absorbed. Not to be confused with adsorption, a purely surface phenomenon.
