Definition:
A naturally occurring rock-like material. Fibers can be prepared by melt spinning basalt rock to resemble those fibers made by the melt spinning of glass. The basalt fibers are more resistant to alkali than glass, and have better interracial adhesion to epoxy resins in polymer composites.
