Definition:
A family of vegetable fibers which run the length of the plant stem. Found in the inner bark of plants, bast fibers are surrounded by enveloping tissue and are cemented together by pectic gums. Included in the family are jute, flax, sunn, hemp and ramie, some of which are used in reinforced plastics.
