Definition:
A solvent and intermediate in the production of phenolics, epoxies, styrene and nylon. Benzene can be alkylated with ethylene to give ethylbenzene, which is then dehydrogenated to form styrene. Hydrogenation of benzene yields cyclohexane, a solvent and raw material for preparing adipic acid, from which nylon is derived. The crude or technical grade of benzene derived from the distillation of coal is called benzol.
