Definition:
A particle created at the instant of emission from a radioactive atomic nucleus, having a mass 1/1837 that of the proton. A negatively charged beta panicle is identical to an ordinary electron. A positively charged beta particle (positron) differs from an electron by having equal but opposite electrical properties. A stream of beta particles is called a beta ray. Such rays are used in equipment for measuring and controlling the thickness of plastic films and extrudates.
