Definition:
A weave in which two sets of continuous fibers are interwoven symmetrically about an axis. One set woven is at an angle of 0° and the other set at an angle of 180°. A common braid construction is 45° which can be diametrically or longitudinally stretched, or contracted, and made to conform to highly complex shapes. Braids are susceptible to fiber crimping which can reduce composite strength but can improve resistance to shear and torsion better than most other two-dimensional reinforcements.
