Definition: Chemical agents used primarily in fibers, to overcome yellow casts and to enhance clarity or brightness. In contrast to blueing agents which act by removing yellow light, optical brighteners absorb the invisible ultraviolet rays and convert their energy into visible blue-violet light. Thus, they cannot be used in compounds that also contain U.V. absorbing agents. Examples of optical brighteners are coumarins, naphthotriazolylstilbenes, benzoxazolyl, benzimidazoyl, naphthylimide, and diaminostilbene disulfonates. Also known as optical brighteners, fluorescent bleaches, optical whitening agents.
