Definition:
A hydrated magnesium ortho-silicate, the chief constituent of the serpentine type of asbestos. Chrysotile-bearing asbestos is the most widely used type, accounting for over 90% of the world production. Its fine and silky fibers and mats and felts used as fillers and reinforcements for plastics are prohibited. This use is now prohibited because of irritation to a worker's lungs (asbestosis), which can result in fatal emphysema.
