Definition: A frequency-dependent viscosity function determined during forced harmonic oscillation of shear stress. It is related to the complex shear modulus and represents the angle between the viscous stress and the shear stress. The complex viscosity function is equal to the difference between the dynamic viscosity and the out-of-phase viscosity, or imaginary part of the complex viscosity:

η* = complex viscosity
η' = dynamic viscosity
η'' = out-of-phase viscosity

The complex viscosity can also be represented as

η* = viscosity - i X elasticity
