Definition: Used for two types of capillary instruments: one for concentrated solutions or polymer melts described under capillary rheometer, and the other for measuring dilute solution viscosities. The most widely used for the latter type employs a glass capillary tube. The time of flow of a measured volume of solution through the tube under the force of gravity is compared with the time taken for the same volume of pure solvent, or of another liquid of known viscosity to flow through the same capillary.
