Definition:
Short fibers of this refined wood product are used as reinforcing fibers in urea-formaldehyde (UF) and melamine formaldehyde (MF) molding compounds to reduce shrinkage, brittleness and impact resistance. Axially orientated cellulose fibers are also used as an elastomeric reinforcement. Cellulosic fibers containing HDPE (10-20%) can be thermally bonded by heating to 150°C. Natural cellulosic fibers such as jute, flax, ramie, henequen, abaca and sisal can, in many instances, be used in polyester structural applications as an inexpensive substitute for glass fibers.
