Definition:
Functional terminal groups at either end of a polymeric molecule, such as amino or carboxyl, which are normally different from the repeating unit group or groups. Although they make up a minute portion of the polymer as a whole, the end groups may vary considerably from the chemical structure of the main chain of the polymer molecule to which they are attached, and may exert an effect on the properties of the polymer that is out of proportion to their number.
