Definition:
A term employed for light-transmitting fibers of glass and, more recently, transparent plastics such as PMMA. Each fiber is coated with a material having a refractive index lower than that of the fiber itself and many fibers may be gathered in a bundle jacketed in polyethylene or other flexible plastic. Such bundles transmit light from one end to the other regardless of shape, by total internal reflection.
