Definition: Heating A method of heating electrically conductive materials, usually metallic parts, by placing the part or material in a high-frequency electromagnetic field generated by passing an alternating electric current through a primary coil surrounding the part. The alternating magnetic field induces, in the part, eddy currents which generate heat. Plastics, being poor conductors, cannot be heated directly by induction heating but the process is used indirectly by placing the plastic in a susceptor (a material which is heated by the magnetic field). The plastic is then heated by radiation or conduction from the susceptor.
