Definition: (1) A number calculated from dilute solution viscosity measurements of a polymer, used to denote degree of polymerization or molecular size. The formula is:

where

NS = viscosity of the solution
N0 = viscosity of the solvent
c = concentration in grams per ml

Utilization of K-Value as a resin specification is used in Europe, but rarely in the U.S. (2) The term K-Value (K-factor) is also used for coefficient of thermal conductivity. See also THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY.
