Definition:
Experiments by Joule demonstrated that a measured quantity of mechanical energy is completely converted to a measured quantity of heat. In the old CGS system, the units of energy and heat are the erg and the gram-calorie respectively. In the SI system, the unit for both heat and energy is the joule. For comparison the gram-calorie is approximately equal to 4.187 joules.
