Definition: MMCs include metals reinforced with: continuous fibers such as boron, silicon carbide, graphite or alumina; wires including tungsten, beryllium, titanium and molybdenum; and discontinuous materials such as fibers, whiskers and particulates. The reinforcements are chosen to increase stiffness, strength as well as heat and wear resistance. Isotropic MMCs can be processed using conventional metal fabrication techniques such as extrusion, rolling, near-net-shape forging, shear spinning and welding.
