Definition:
A method for producing ceramic matrix composites, e.g., silicon whiskers or fibers are dispersed into silicon powder and then reacted with nitrogen to form silicon nitride at temperatures of 1,450°C compared to 1,750°C used for hot pressing. In another approach, the reaction bonding is accomplished by using silicon powder as the starting material followed by nitriding which fills the void between the silicon particles with silicon nitride.
