Definition: The international unit of quantity or dose for X-rays or gamma rays, equal to the quantity of X- or gamma rays which will produce as a result of ionization one electrostatic unit of electricity of either sign in 1 cc of dry air at 0°C and standard atmospheric pressure. In SI, the roentgen is expressed as 2.58 E-04 coulombs per kilogram. See also RAD.
