Definition:
A number of ends, tows, or strands collected into a parallel bundle with little or no twist. When the strands are twisted together, the term spun roving is used. Roving is used in continuous lengths for filament winding consisting of 8 to 120 (usually 60) single filaments or strands gathered together in a bundle, and usually treated with a coupling agent to promote adhesion of the glass to the plastic. Glass rovings are predominantly used in filament winding, and are generally wound as bands or tapes with as little twist as possible. Roving may also be chopped into short lengths for use in reinforced plastic molding compounds, and woven skeins or mats for use in laminates. See also REINFORCEMENT.
