Definition:
A tough paper coated with an abrasive material such as a silica, garnet, silicon carbide, or aluminum oxide which is used for smoothing and polishing. It is graded by a grit numbering system according to which the highest grit numbers (16 to 40) are used for coarse smoothing. It may also be designated by the /0 grade system, according to which very fine includes grades from 10/0 to 6/0; fine, 5/0 to 3/0; medium, 2/0, 1/0, 1/2; coarse, 1, I½, and 2; very coarse, 2½, 3, 3½, and 4.
