Definition: The resistance of a plastic material to scratching by another material can be measured using the Bierbaum test. The specimen is moved laterally on the stage of a microscope under a 3 gm loaded diamond point. The hardness value is expressed as the load in kilograms divided by the square of the width of the scratch in millimeters. Other methods for scratch hardness determination include the use of hardness standards for scratching plastics such as hardness-graded pencils (kohinoor value), minerals of known hardness (mohs value) falling carborundum particles.
