Definition:
An apparatus for developing centrifugal forces, up to 1,000,000 times the force of gravity, to cause very small particles to settle out. The velocity of sedimentation can be determined according to Stokes' law, from the mean size and size distribution. Sedimentation studies of high polymers performed with an ultracentrifuge are used for determining weight-average molecular weights and molecular weight distributions.
