Definition:

Balsa is a core material used in structural composite applications.

Derived from a low density wood, found primarily in Ecuador, balsa is extremely strong and stiff per unit of weight.

When used in composites, balsa often will have FRP skins surrounding. Common uses of balsa are on wind turbine blades, boats, and transportation floor panels.
