Core Material - What Is a Core Material

Definition:

To make a composite structure stiff, one can increase the thickness of the composite. A core material is an inexpensive way to make a structure thicker with out drastically increasing weight.

Composite skins surround the core material, and provide much of the strength to the overall structure.

Examples:
Honeycomb, foam, and balsa.
